How do you get attention when your friend always takes the spotlight?

I have a friend who always has to be the center of attention. If we are having a discussion with a group of people she will usually be the one talking and I cannot even get a word in. Even if there are just a few of us she will have to be in the spotlight. The annoying thing is, it works on everyone. Everyone who meets her thinks she is the nicest person and acts as if I am anitsocial but that is not the case. She is able to take over and I feel powerless to try to gain some attention for myself. Especially when she will tell these stories that make her look so great and I can't compete. I am not one to compete for attention and I feel like that's what I would need to do with her. It's really annoying.
