Western Bits/Bridles? Shanks?

If a horse is 5 years or older in most organizations you have to use a shanked bit. If it is younger, then you can use a snaffle or bosal. The exception is if you're doing speed events or cattle events - then you can typically use whatever you'd like. In western pleasure, horsemanship, and reining though you must use a shanked bit.
